Week of April 28th
Yikes!
Between all the snow days and days off, I've gotten a bit slack. Rest assured the homework your darling children should be writing daily has been updated regularly!
LA - we are on to spelling words 41-55. This is mainly to encourage students to think about those words we use every day, rather than guessing.
We are working on a how-to / procedural writing, which is to be finished / good copy by Thursday. A rubric has been given out and gone over so they know what the expectations are. Click here for the page students were given.
Students will have to present their writing, either in person or they have the option to record themselves at home and bring that in to show. The writing should be able to stand on its own though, and shouldn't need props or anything else to make it a good explanation.
Math - we have started our new unit on fractions / decimals. Talk to your student about when / where we see these numbers in real life, and have them read those numbers to you.
For those of us who might be rusty, we read like this:
1234.56 would be one thousand two hundred thirty four AND fifty six hundredths. We call the decimal "and" and don't use that word anywhere else in our number reading.
This Thursday will be hat day. Students can pay $1 which will go toward the grade 8 end of year trip and wear their hat / bonnet / whatever in school for the day (except for Oh Canada!)

St. Patrick's Day (and the rest of the week)
LA - finish up word work #5. Normally the sheets should be completed by the Friday of each week, but we were late getting this one last week, and we missed Thursday's class time to work on it.
Book talk projects are due Friday, March 28th. Please take you time with these - the idea is to show us that you've read the book and understood it well. What you show us needs to be important to the story, and well-explained.
Math - times and division facts to 9x9
We are doing a Spring Basket fundraiser for the grade 5 Snyder Mountain trip - please send in items this week.
Last Monday, we were very lucky to have a presentation by Donna and Andy. Order forms went home, and need to come back ASAP.

Week of March 10 - 14
LA - Before the break, students were given a book response / summary sheet, which is due Friday.
We have started a big-ish book report / book talk project. Everyone was given a sheet which had 7 different ideas for projects on it - acting, drawing, writing, building, etc. The goal of the project is to show that they have read and understood the entire book. Each student will be doing his or her own project, unless they have chosen to act out a scene. By this Friday, everyone has to know which book and which project they'll be doing, and projects will be presented Friday, March 28.
Book orders also went out before the break, and are due back this Friday.
Math - continue practicing times tables. Most students are fluent now, but some are still struggling. Feel free to quiz your student to check in!
We have started math intervention groups, and many students are now in small groups first thing in the morning. We will continue this until our outside Paw Fit starts up again, and based on need, perhaps longer. Groups are flexible and based on what needs are in our classes.
This Wednesday, Harvey Studios will be in the building to take team and group shots, so please have your student here if he or she was involved in a school activity this year.
The coffee order has been submitted, and they're getting it ready for us!
Some of you may have noticed we have had a buzzer / doorbell system installed at the school. Doors will be open on arrival for busses, but locked the rest of the day. It is a bit of a headache, but is absolutely the best way to keep our little people safe, and to know who is coming and going.

Winter Carnival
LA - keep reading!
Students need to choose and finish a book to use for their reading response, these will be due the week after March Break.
Some students have not handed in their stories yet, these are late, please finish them up!
Math - keep practicing times / division facts.
We've started a unit on measurement and time, so encourage your child to read the time on analog clocks.
Winter Carnival is this week, and we've got some fun activities planned for each day.
Tuesday is Pink Shirt Day, and we'll have a special anti-bullying presentation.
Wednesday is PJ day (remember you're at school and will have to go outside!)
Thursday is Crazy Hair day
Friday is School Colours day (blue and white)
This Thursday will be our last day of skating, so we'd love for all students to be able to skate!
Please send in any last-minute coffee orders and money, we'll send the order in this week.
