Week of January 27

Math - Because of the storm day on Monday, our math test has been postponed until Friday (our next double period).  We'll continue our review until then; encourage your student to practice the times facts up to 9x9 and the related division facts (9x9=81, 81 / 9 = 9)

LA - Our final writing is due Wednesday.  Stories need to be written, revised, and edited before being done in good copy.
We will present our debates on Thursday.

Any students who haven't brought in their snowshoeing permission slips should do so as soon as possible - we hope this cold snap will ... snap soon, and we'll be able to head out for phys ed.

There will be a movie night Thursday at 6:15, we will be watching Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.  A snack and drink are included in the $6 admission price.

Drama club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon

Knitting club meets Wednesdays at noon - Arm Knitting! It's super fast, requires no equipment at all other than some nice soft bulky yarn.  She uses 2 skeins at the same time, but you can use one, doubled over.

Book club meets Wednesdays at noon

Week of January 20th

Welcome back!  A little late on my end...

LA - We are doing our final writing, and working to get 20 books finished up by the end of the month.  Our writing is a short story (creative writing, not a retelling of something that really happened).  We are focussing on 'show, don't tell', which means that instead of saying "I was happy", you describe what the person looks like, sounds like, what exactly they're feeling and thinking, etc.
Students have a planner (click to see / print) to help them with their writing, it needs to be filled in by Wednesday.
Book orders have gone home, please send them in ASAP.

Math - we're finishing up our unit on multiplying and dividing.  We'll start our review this week, but I can't stress enough how important it is for students to become automatic / quick with their times facts up to 9x9.  Each student has been given a set of flash cards and time in class to practice, but I encourage them to practice at home as well!
Our unit quiz will be Monday, and covers multplying up to numbers like 34 x 72, and dividing numbers like 342 / 9.  Practice those facts!

Phys Ed - students will be going snowshoeing for gym class when weather permits, and almost everyone has brought back their permission slips.  If you haven't, please do!
We will also be going skating every Thursday in February, from 10:45-11:45.  Students need helmets (CSA approved preferred), skates and gloves or mitts in order to go to the rink.

In other news...

This week, we are starting a 'safe arrival' program. This means that if a student is unexpectedly absent, someone from the school will call home to make sure that the student is safe, and hasn't gotten lost on the way to school.
In order to avoid these phone calls, we are asking that parents and guardians let us know before hand (or the morning of) if a student will be absent. A note, an email (sarah.roach@nbed.nb.ca) or a phone call (363-4717) will all do the job. Calls will be made shortly after 8:30.

We are doing a Jeans Drive to support homeless youth. If you or your child has some outgrown but still good jeans that would fit a 12+ year old, please send them in. There is a collection box in the front lobby.

There will be a KVMS Movie Night for all students k-8 on Thursday, January 30th. Arrival time is 6:15, pick up at 8pm. Cost is $6 and includes a snack and drink. We'll be watching Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2!

Other than that, it's business as usual here as we finish up the English portion of our grade 5 year, and get ready for the switch!
