Not much for homework this week!
Hopefully we will see you all at the concert on Wednesday at either 9 or 12:45.
I'm sending home a "Winter Break Reading Challenge" for the break. For each marshmallow the kids do (read under the tree, read in your jammies, things like that) they glue one paper marshmallow on to their mug. We're trying to get 100 minutes or more of reading over the holiday!
Have a great break, and enjoy the time with your loved ones! See you all in the new year.

Week of December 9th
Just a reminder that our Christmas Concert will be next Wednesday, December 18th. Shows are at 9 and 12:45. If there is a snow day, it will be Thursday.
Math - there will be an extra practice sheet going home, which will be due Friday. Keep practicing times and division facts!
LA - we will be starting a "Holidays around the World" project on Wednesday. Students will work in pairs to research and then present different holidays and traditions in countries around the world.
Keep reading for 20 minutes each night!
Most students have handed in their projects, but many of them have not completed the book summary sheet (click there to download). Please get these in as soon as possible!
Health - food logs are due Tuesday, make sure you have 3 days recorded. Bring in a nutrition label for class for us to check out.
We have started a "Random Acts of Kindness" project. Each student's goal is to do one act at school and one in their 'real life' each day, which will get them 16 acts of kindness by next Friday. They are welcome to do more that 16, of course. If we all complete our mission, it will be close to 400 acts of kindness! That's a pretty amazing number.
In order to practice for the concert, we are switching the class schedules for Monday and Tuesday. This doesn't much matter, other than the kids will have gym on Monday, instead of Tuesday.
The SRC is selling tickets to win a gift basket, notices have gone home. Tickets are $2 each, or $5 for 3.

November 25 - 29
LA - everyone should be finished their first / sloppy copy of the descriptive report by Wednesday. We'll work on revising and hand in our good copies by Friday Monday.
Math - please practice multiplication facts from 1x1 up to 9x9. Students have learned strategies to figure out answers, but ideally these facts will become automatic. We've also talked about multiplying by 0, 1, 10, 100, etc.
Report cards will be coming home onWednesday Thursday afternoon. Please sign and return the envelopes as soon as possible.
Two neat websites we looked at this week:
This one: Create your personalized food guide lets you do just that. You enter your age (and gender, not that it matters) and then choose foods from each group that you like. The site will then make you your very own food guide which you can print or save. Pretty cool.
This one: Ghost Blasters, lets kids practice multiples for times tables. You can set it to be anything that's a multiple of 2 (2x __ ) 3, 4, right on up. There is a game for adding as well, here.
Friday is feel good Friday, wear your jerseys and get ready for some staff-vs-students sports action!
Our class will be singing Carol of the Bells in the Christmas concert this year. Click for a copy of the lyrics we'll be using. Practice lots, we'd like to be able to do it without a paper copy!

November 18 - 22
It's been a week! I have been out sick for 3 days, so we're playing a bit of catch-up. I heard nothing but excellent things from the supply teachers though, so that's fantastic!
LA - We are working on descriptive reports - on an animal, a place, a building, etc. All students should have their information ready to go, if not they need to finish up over the weekend. We'll write our 'sloppy copies' next week, and do revising and editing to hand them in for Friday.
We have also started our big book project. Students have many choices - they may draw, write, act, build. We've gone over all of the project choices, and most students have chosen which they'd like to do. All students must *finish* the book before finishing their project! Projects will be presented / shared December 5th. We'll be working on them in class, so if students need things from home, they should bring them in as soon as possible.
Math - our new unit is all on multiplying, dividing, and estimating. Please practice times table facts up to 9x9 (and higher, if you can!) to help make this easier!
Also:
There is a tree lighting tonight (Friday) at the Rec Centre at 6:30. Santa and cookies will be there!
Please return the letters about Snider Mountain, even if your child is not planning to attend (just so we have numbers)
There is a movie night fundraiser on December 5th at 6:30. Cost is $6 and includes snack and drink.
Christmas Dinner will be served in the cafeteria on December 5th as well. Cost is $6 and includes a lovely turkey dinner. Tickets will be on sale ahead of time.

November 4 - 8
LA - get the persuasive writing in as soon as possible! Several students have not completed theirs. Continue reading every night, and recording it in your reading log. We're now on word work #8.
Health - we've spent some time talking about personal safety, how to avoid dangerous sitations with strangers or even people we may know. Each student has been asked to create a family password that can be used in emergencies when you might need to send someone else to pick up your child.
Math - review sheets due in. We'll have our unit assessment on Friday.
Our class will be reading the poem In Flanders Fields at our remembrance day assembly Thursday. Each student has a copy of the poem to practice. We're working on not stopping in the middle of lines, but remembering to pause at commas and periods. We've reorganized the line breaks in a way that makes it easier to read properly. Think about what the words are saying!
A reminder that there will be no school on Monday, November 11th, because of the holiday. There is also no class for students on Friday, November 15th, as we will be holding student-led conferences in the morning, and PD in the afternoon.
On that note, forms for student-led have gone home. Please pick your top 3 available times when your student can come in with you and show you all the great stuff we're doing! I'll send home a confirmation the end of this week.

October 28 - November 1
LA - Persuasive writing is due Friday.
Our Word Study sheet #7 is also due Friday
Students should continue to read every night and record it in their logs. Reading out loud once or twice a week is a great idea, and helps imrpve the fluency / smoothness of their reading.
Math - we've almost finished our second unit! A review sheet is coming home tonight. Students should be able to complete all of the questions, please have it back for Friday or Monday (Halloween tends to get in the way of homework)
Student led conferences will be November 14-15. A note has gone home with available times. Please choose your top 3 so that we can schedule everyone in. The format is quite casual, with the focus on your student showing you his / her work so far. Report cards come out November 27th.
Phys Ed will be outside on Wednesday. Bundle up!
On that note, it's really cold out! Please ensure your student has a coat, hat, and gloves or mitts, as well as warm footwear.

October 15 - 18
LA - We'll be presenting our how-to writing on Wednesday this week. This one will be handed in as a finished piece, so should be checked for punctuation, spelling, as well as being sure that the explanation is clear and complete.
We have also been working on scary stories! We'll finish these up by Wednesday, so that we can have a spooky story-a-thon for Halloween.
Math - we've started our new unit on whole numbers to 1 000 000. Students will be responsible to write numbers in different formats - standard: 946 123, expanded: 900 000+40 000+6000+100+20+3, in words: nine hundred forty-six thousand one hundred twenty-three, as well as to draw or use base 10 blocks to model the numbers. We'll also be adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing with large numbers.
Our first Unit Assessment has gone home, please look it over with your child, and then sign and return it to school. A letter explaining the marking has gone home this week as well.
All students are bringing home progress reports on Friday. We're still relatively early in the year, but we want to touch base with everyone since report cards don't officially go home until mid-November. It is a basic overview of math, LA, and classroom behaviours. Please sign and return the bottom portion of the sheet.

October 7-11
A reminder that this is a short week! Students do not have classes Thursday or Friday. Enjoy your long weekend, and have a great turkey day!
LA - Everyone is due to present their book commericals on Tuesday. We've had lots of time to do these in class - each student is responsible to tell us about their book - who is in it, when and where it takes place, what it's about, 2-3 main events from the beginning and 2-3 from the middle. With that, they'll make it sound interesting enough that other students will want to read the book as well. They'll also read a short part of the book (around one minute) to the class, which shows what a great book it is.
Next week, we'll present our how-to writing. Students can (but do not have to) bring in items to help explain what they are doing / making. They will (hopefully) have access to the smartboard as well.

September 1 - October 4
LA - Our book commercials will be presented starting next Tuesday, October 8. Please practice reading your presentation and the part of the story you'll be sharing with us.
All students will do a reading assessment with me on Monday to check for fluency. Please practice reading aloud this weekend!
The October book orders have gone home. I'll send them in on Oct 15th (a Tuesday) so please have them in before then. Cheques (made out to Scholastic) are ideal, but exact change will work as well.
Math - We'll have our first quiz on Thursday. It covers all of unit 1, on patterns in numbers.
Harvey's has let us know that retakes will be October 24 (Thursday).
Next Thursday and Friday (October 10-11) are teacher Professional Development days, so there will be no class for students. The following Monday is Thanksgiving!
A reminder that the elementary cross country meet is this Friday in Nackawic. Make sure to have your permission slips in, and dress for cool weather in the morning but warmer in the afternoon.

Week of September 23
LA - Everyone should have handed in their narrative writings (stories) this past Friday.
We've got a new wordwork sheet, lesson #4, which is due Friday. Our wordwork this year is focussing on word parts - prefixes, roots, and suffixes. This will help students to have a base knowledge to attack new words they come across for the rest of their lives!
All students have started working on a book commericial - a short (3-5 minute) presentation about a book they have finished reading this year. They'll tell us the basics - who is in it, when and where does it take place - as well as why it's great and why we should all read it. They will also share a short excerpt (30 seconds to one minute of reading aloud) that shows what a great book it is.
A flier has gone home about subscribing to Owl magazine. We're getting it at a discount, so if it's something you're interested in, now is a great time to sign up!
Math - please keep practicing multiplication facts. Some of us are a bit rusty!
Reminders - Some students have decided to join the peer mediator program here at school, those forms need to be in by Wednesday.
Picture orders (or retake requests) are due Wednesday as well.
A permission slip for the cross country meet in Nackawic on Friday, October 4th, has gone home. Please have these back by Wednesday, Oct 2nd, at the latest. Students will need to bring snacks / lunch and drinks with them, and be dressed appropriately for running outside!

Week of September 16th
LA - students should be reading for about 20 minutes each night. Please have your student keep track in their homework book.
Stories are due Friday, as well as word work sheets. We've had lots of time to work on these in class, but some students may need to bring theirs home. The story can be a true one, or one that is completely made up. Good copies should be neatly done on looseleaf.
Math - students now have their logins for sumdog.com and are free to practice there as often as they / you would like. The school code is keswick_2 (no spaces)
School pictures are Wednesday, orders are due the following Wednesday, September 25th.
Meet the Teacher is this Thursday at 5:30! We'll begin in the gym and then have a quick classroom meet and greet, followed by a BBQ out on the playground. Hope to see you there!
Book orders are due this Friday. If you need to send it in after that, please let me know and I'll hold off ordering.

Week of September 9, 2013
All students now have Sumdog.com logins, and can practice as much as you let them at home! The questions will automatically find your child's level, so they'll actually be practicing their skills without getting frustrated, or things being too easy.
Due to lack of interest, we're no longer doing the Barnhouse orders for lunch on Friday. The cafeteria will be open from now on on Mondays and Fridays, offering one meal choice. Regular service will continue Tuesdays - Thursdays.
Meet the teacher is next Thursday, September 19th, at 5:30. We'll start out with a tour of the school / classrooms, and then a brief meeting followed by a BBQ outside. Hope to see everyone there!
A reminder that our school is nut free and strawberry free. There is a huge selection of nut-free "peanut butters" available. Many kids really like the "wow butter", mine included. I personally don't, but I do really like one called "no nuts", that's made from roasted peas. Sounds odd, but it's quite tasty! Sobey's tends to have a better selection of these products than Superstore for some reason.

First week of school!
Welcome!
We won't have any 'official' homework this week, because we've sent home enough paperwork to build 1000 paper cranes. There were 10 items which went home, 5 of which need to be checked / filled in / sent back. Many of you have sent everything in already (including the $20 student fee), which is great! If you haven't yet, please do as soon as possible so that Mrs. White, our admin assisstant, can relax.
We also got notice that our school pictures will be Wednesday, September 18. They're offering us the very cool green-screen background again, and there are lots of choices in the notice for your background. There are more choices on the Harvey's Studio website as well.
Starting next week, students will be expected to do some reading each night, and will have a homework tracker in their duotangs.
Happy Friday!
Mrs. R
